Sanyo HD camcorder recognizes faces

Sanyo has announced a new camcorder that can record in FullHD (1920×1080i) on a SD card. The Xacti HD1010 is compact and features Sanyo’s Face Chaser” face detection technology for both video and stills, plus a new  slow-motion video mode and seven frames-per-second sequential shooting.

Face Detection and Face Chaser technology monitors the people you are trying to film and then adjusts brightness and focus to create clear photos. This technology can be used to recognize up to 12 faces at a time in both video and still photos.

The camera also features a slow motion function, which is marketed as begin great for sports videos. The  HD1010 can record video at 300 frames-per-second produce slow-motion 60fps video playback. But it’s also fast as it can take seven photos in a single second.

The device can take 4 megapixel photographs and you can record both videos and pictures up to 32GB on SD or SDHC cards.

The SANYO Xacti HD1010 will be available in the U.S.A. in July 2008 at
an estimated price of $799.99, will weigh 9.9 ounces (including battery and storage card) supports MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 and is said to be able to record about 87 minutes of FullHD footage on a 8GB SD card.

Although this thing, when open, looks like a phaser from Star Trek, I like the price and features. I may have to cash in the $800 I have in empty beer bottles to pay for it, though.

"including battery and storage card" If Sanyo follows industry standards, it'll pack in a 32MB card that you'll promptly throw out before replacing with your own reasonably-sized card.
