Seagate has revealed its external Backup Plus external HDDs with a capacity of up to 5TB. It's the first 2.5" drive that requires no external power adapter with such a large capacity.
Also Western Digital sells external 5TB HDDs, but these come in a 3.5" form-factor and require an additional adapter. Seagate's Backup Plus HDD gets its power from the USB cable that connects to the desktop or laptop.
Seagate has fitted a BarraCuda 2.5" HDD inside the case which uses 1TB platters that spin at 5,400RPM.
The USB connector is still a widely used regular USB3.0 connector, not of the USB-C Type. The compact design is similar to that of the 4TB model and the drive comes with software for automatic backups and 200GB of free OneDrive cloud storage for 2 years.
The Seagate Backup Plus 5TB drive (STDR5000100) will be released in December this year and will cost about $190.
