Silicon Power shows off waterproof HDD

Silicon Power has introduced a new waterproof hard drive designed to withstand water, vibration impact and other damage.

Dubbed the Armor A70, the drive will ship with 250GB, 320GB, 500GB, or 640GB storage capacities, supporting Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.  It is a USB 2.0 device with no external power source required, which makes it even easier to transport.

Testing indicates the Armor A70 can be submerged in three feet of water for up to 30  minutes.  It is also dust proof, impact resistant and vibration resistant -- reportedly meeting "military standards of ruggedness."

The HDDs will ship with two months of Norton Internet Security (Windows only) and SP Widget.  Additional software features weren't disclosed by Silicon Power.

Silicon Power didn't announce a release date or pricing information for the Armor A70 HDD.

The continued decline in HDD cost has forced manufacturers to offer customized products aimed at niche markets, such as damage resistant HDDs.  There also has been a shift in interest towards portable HDDs, which can store large amounts of information that can be easily transported to multiple locations.
