Skype stops supporting Skype for TV, Samsung removes app from its smart TVs in June

Microsoft's popular video-chat and voice-call service Skype will no longer be supported on smart TVs starting today. Users will also no longer be able to signup or reset their password from their TV, this only remains possible through the Skype website.

According to Skype it's up to TV manufacturers to decide whether they want to remove Skype from their TVs or to continue to offer the unsupported version. Samsung already announced that starting the 2nd of June 2016 the Skype service will be removed from Samsung smart TVs. Users will receive a notice about the change on their TV.

Other manufacturers might follow Samsung's lead but could also keep the unsupported Skype for TV app available for a while.

In a statement on its website Skype states that it has made the decision to no longer support Skype for TV as the majority of users access the service from a mobile device, including in the living room. The company therefore wants to focus its development on its main platforms.
