Microsoft has released a preview of Skype Translator, the near real time translation software for the free call software. The application has to be downloaded from the Windows App Store and currently only translates spoken Spanish, Italian and Mandarin to English and vice versa. When it comes to instant message chat, then the software is able to translate in over 50 languages.
Skype Translator Preview is currently only available on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 and should make it easier to communicate with users all over the world. When talking to someone in another language the software can either show a transcript of what the other party says, or you can opt to actually hear the translation.

Although Microsoft claims real-time translation, the video demonstrating Skype Translator shows that the software needs some processing time that makes a real time conversation not really possible yet. The company claims however that the software will improve when it gets more users.
