Sony announces external SSDs and HDDs - military grade

Sony today announced an external Solid State Disk (SSD) and two external hard disk drives (HDD). All drives connect to the computer via the USB3.0 interface but also support Firewire 800. Sony specifies that the SSD  can transfer data at rates with a maximum of  400MB/s, while the two HDD drives are able to transfer data up to 120MB/s.  The SSD  (PSZ-SA25) has a capacity of 256 GB and the HDDs are available in capacities of 500 GB ( PSZ-HA50) and 1 TB (PSZ-HA1T).

The HDDs spin at 5400 RPM  and are powered by either USB or Firewire. These interfaces can also supply power to the SSD which means both the HDDs and SSD don't need an external power supply.

The SSD and HDD drives are both compliant with MIL-STD-810G standards,  a standard used by the United States Department of Defense, that defines the requirements of military product performance and quality. One of the tests for free-fall drop includes dropping a device in a total of 26 directions from a height of 122cm to a plywood board while the device is not operating. Therefore Sony claims the new portable drives can absorb falls of up to 2.3 meters.

The drives come with full Sony support including expert technical assistance and a three year warranty. They will become available by the end of September 2013 for a yet unknown price.
