Sony HD movie channel launched on Dish, DirecTV & U-verse

Movie buffs now have a new HD channel available on select cable and satellite TV providers to indulge their film cravings.

Sony Pictures Television president, Andy Kaplin, has announced the launch of Sony Movie channel, now available on DISH Network, DIRECTV and AT&T U-verse TV. The network will feature high definition films of all genres, uncut and without commercial interruption.

"We're seeing a strong demand for high definition movie content," said Kaplan in a press release announcing the new venture. "In an effort to meet consumers' needs, Sony Movie Channel was designed specifically for the Hollywood movie fan, bringing our high-quality catalogue of feature films directly to viewers."

Dish network subscribers will have free access to the channel for the first month of broadcasting. They will also be able to access programming on DishOnline.com, and HD Platinum customers will have access to Video on Demand content.

Customers of DirectTV will need a subscription to the HD Xtra pack to access the Sony Movie Channel, while AT&T U-verse customers will find the new network if they’ve subscribed to the HD Premium Tier package.

Programming for Sony’s first multi-platform network will draw from the company’s extensive film catalogue which boasts over 3,500 titles. The channel already has a promotional website up and running with a programming schedule available. They’ve also launched a Twitter account that appears to not only be promoting the channel, but also responding to customer inquiries.

I’m sure I’m not the only one who thinks that this would be a great thing for Sony to eventually offer to PlayStation Network customers. Offering a dedicated Sony movie channel (in HD!) on the company’s own game console would be a win-win situation for them and PS3 owners alike. How ‘bout it Sony?
