Sony removes HDCP protection for recording Playstation 4 streams

Sony works on a firmware update for the Playstation 4 which makes it possible to disable HDCP for recording gameplay. It will also become possible to store videos and screenshots on an USB stick. Sony announced the plans on its Playstation Blog. There the company announced it would fulfill its earlier promise, the option to capture gameplay by disabling the HDCP protection.

The firmware allows to disable the High Bandwidth Digital Content protection which protects the HDMI output of the console. The firmware update will also add a simple video-editor to edit the recorded clips and it will  become possible to store clips on an external USB device.

Sony hopes to add more improvement in the future. The company hopes to release more patches enabling features for players looking to stream gameplay. It should become possible to stream to Twitch and Ustream in 720p and it should become possible to store Twitch streams.
