Hack to download songs from Spotify for free no longer working

Spotify has, as expected, closed the loophole that made it possible to download streaming tracks to computers in the MP3 format. Yesterday, a Dutch developer posted a Chrome extension in the Chrome Web Store called Downloadify.

The extension made it possible to download Spotify tracks, which normally only can be streamed. It worked simple and everyone using a free account with the Spotify web client was able to download every track as MP3. This was possible because the streaming music service uses HTML 5 and didn't encrypt the streams. The extension therefore 'recorded' the streams to MP3 files.

The author of the extension announced on Twitter that the company has taken countermeasures which now renders the Downloadify extension obsolete. Some people report that it still works until they refresh their browser window.

The author of the extension already contacted Spotify so the company could close the loophole which apparently they did today.  Although the extension no longer works, it's open source and could therefore be modified in such a way that it works again, even with the countermeasures Spotify has currently put in place.
