SSD price per GB drops below $0.50 - how low can they go?

Heavy competition between SSD brands and scaling down of NAND results in lower prices of SSDs, the price per GB has now dropped below $0.50. Crucial sells its M500 with a capacity of 960GB at $447.99 which means the price per GB is $0.47.

The 1TB  Samsung 840 EVO series is currently sold by Amazon at $494.95 which means the price per GB of the drive is $0.49. Seagate's 600 series 480GB sells at $229.99 resulting in a price per GB of $0.48.

 The price of the Samsung drive is the least surprising, the company uses 19 nm TLC NAND from its own factories in the 840 EVO SSDs. Both Seagate and Crucial use MLC NAND, the Seagate 600 uses 19nm Toshiba NAND and the Crucial M500 drives use 20 nm MLC NAND. Besides Samsung, Crucial and Seagate, also Kingston  aggressively prices its SSDNow V300.

Scaling down NAND memory cells, larger volumes and fierce competition in the SSD market is paying off for customersa quick scan learns us most other SSD brands will need to overcome a price difference of more than $0.10 per GB.
