SSDs 2nd most popular PC component - Samsung SSDs on top

While most new computers still come with traditional HDDs, Solid State Disks (SSDs) are rapidly gaining populairy.  Using Google Trends it's possible to retrieve statistical information on searches from users around the world and to see which brands and models are most searched for.

Searches are a good way of measuring the populairy of something, in this case we've compared a couple of SSD brands and the latest SSD drive released. Our first graphs make it clear that Samsung is currently overtaking Intel when it comes to SSDs. The Korean electronic giant is well known for it's TVs and mobile phones but also their SSDs are rapidly gaining popularity after the launch of their 840 series SSDs as you can see below.

In this graph, we also included Crucial, Kingston and OCZ to see how they compare against both giants. To understand where the rest of the brands are, here are three more graphs that also include Mushkin, Transcend, Adata, OCW, Patriot, Plextor Sandisk and Toshiba. To make it easier to compare, Intel and Samsung are in every graph.

The graphs make clear that Intel and Samsung are the leading brands, Crucial, Kingston and OCZ can still keep up a bit, and other brands are pretty much marginal at the moment. When we look at the latest models from several large vendros then it's clear where Samsung's peak is coming from. The launch of the 840 series seems to be a big hit.

Many websites released reviews on the release date and that generated a lot of searches, resulting in a very steep, nearly linear curve upwards as you can see below.

Another interesting fact is the amount of searches for SSDs compared to other computer components. We've compared CPUs, video cards, mainboards, harddisks and SSDs which resulted in the following graph.

It shows that where SSD searches where non existing before 2007, the term slowly picked up, to become heavily popular in 2012, beating searches for all other computer components, except CPUs. Last but not least, comparing searches for SSDs and HDDs shows an interesting result (hard disk and hard drive show even less searches)

We'll be monitoring popularity of the brands, if you have any requests to compare things, then let us know!
