Survey Says: Amazon Prime could flip Netflix subs

Amazon added streaming videos to its "Prime" package this week.

The new service offers subscribers (who pay $79.99 a year) instant access to over 5,000 movies and TV shows. It's also slightly cheaper than competitor Netflix's yearly fee. That minor difference might make all the difference.

A recent survey suggests trouble for Netflix, providing some surprising numbers regarding how the company's present members feel towards an Amazon Prime that offers a similar video streaming service.

The survey conducted by The Diffusion Group received 534 respondents and found that a decent chunk of current Netflix subscribers - around 36% - would "sign up for Prime and cancel Netflix if the service was comparable," reports Home Media Magazine. The questions were asked before Amazon Prime's upgrade was released.

Other statistics culled from the survey support the notion that Netflix members may soon be frolicking in the greener grass of Amazon Prime.

TGD reports 32% of respondents would sign up for Amazon Prime but maintain their Netflix accounts. A little under 10%  said they had no interest in switching from Netflix, and just over 20% were unsure.

Netflix holds one huge advantage over Amazon Prime right now, however: the sheer volume of available content. While Amazon provides Prime subscribers around 5,000 TV shows and movies to choose from, Netflix boasts over ten times that amount of streaming content. Of course, that will likely change over time. That's when things will get interesting.
