The cybercriminals behind the widespread TeslaCrypt ransomware have released an universal decryption key. This is good news for TeslaCrypt victims as the key allows them to decrypt their files without paying for it.

TeslaCrypt first appeared in March last year and was the most active ransomware in the first quarter of this year. It was different from other ransomware as it specifically targeted games and game platforms. TeslaCrypt searched for games and directories of gaming software, such as Steam. But also images, music files, documents and videos were encrypted.

Through a page on the Tor network the developers of the ransomware have announced to have stopped their 'project' and even apologize. When the antivirus company ESET found out, they contacted the criminals behind TeslaCrypt through the support email and asked for an universal decryption key. For some reason the criminals decided to release it.

The universal key is now added to the tool 'TeslaDecoder' that can be used to decrypt files that were encrypted by any TeslaCrypt variant.
