Simply developing and releasing a new MP3 player is difficult to do, as the Apple iPod continues to dominate the entire MP3 player market.  Aside from Apple, SanDisk, Microsoft and several others continue to battle for marketshare, which doesn’t leave a lot of room for competitors.

But companies creating odd and unique MP3 players have been able to carve out a niche market for themselves, and online gadget site Thanko is going to try and cash in with its Sport MP3 hybrid neckband earbuds and MP3 player.

The Sport MP3 has 2GB of memory, and supports MP3, WMA, and WAV files, while using a lithium-ion battery that has up to five hours of battery life.  The player has a USB port so users simply drag and drop supported music files directly onto the device, and there are three buttons and LEDs on the neckband.

Non-Japanese shoppers can find the interesting MP3 player online for $50 plus shipping.  Even though similar devices have flopped in the United States, Japanese and Chinese companies have seen varying levels of success while marketing similar products  to the Asian market.

If you live in a country where you can purchase the Thanko Sport MP3, is it something you’d be interested in buying?
