The latest hot Blu-ray Disc category? Children's movies

Movie studios are seeing an increased demand for children's movies and TV content on Blu-ray media, as the children’s market takes off after an expected lag behind other movie categories.

After Blu-ray eliminated HD DVD, many people saw an easy road for Blu-ray as the lone HD format against DVD. Instead of seeing success out of the gates, Blu-ray struggled and has only recently started to gain momentum to replace the mighty Digital Versatile Disc (DVD).

Disney has been the clear leader with innovation on Blu-ray and children's media, testing out many state of the art BD Live features and other content, as other movie studios follow their lead. A study released late last year from Nielsen indicated children between the ages of 2 and 11 watch an average of 28 hours (or more) of TV every week -- and 71 percent of viewers between the ages of 8 and 18 have a TV in the bedroom.

"We recognized families are experiencing Disney content on multiple platforms and in various places -- in the home, in the car and on mobile devices," said Gabrielle Chamberlin, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment SVP of product management, in a statement.

Disney recently launched a Blu-ray movie and PlayStation 3 game combo disc, with the custom product packing in a Toy Story High Definition Blu-ray movie along with the PS3 Toy Story 3 video game.

Warner currently controls more than 70 percent in the kid's Blu-ray market, with the overall business segment growing more than 20 percent in the past 12 months. It’s expected that movie studios will begin a stronger marketing effort to support children’s DVD and Blu-ray movies going forward, especially as the economy slowly recovers.

As time goes on, Blu-ray will become the norm for physical media, and future generations might not even know what a DVD is. Should we be scared of all the children turning Blu?
