The Walking Dead and other shows headed to Netflix

After a rough couple of months Netflix is trying to get some positivity going in the form of a deal with AMC Networks to bring a slew of content exclusively to the streaming video provider. The multi-year licensing agreement reached between AMC and Netflix this week will bring prior seasons of certain shows exclusively to Netflix streaming and make new seasons available to customers right before the next season airs.

The most notable show to come exclusively to Netflix through this deal is season 1 of "The Walking Dead" which is available to stream today. That is fantastic timing for Netflix users who want to catch up on last season right before the premiere of Season 2 next week. In the future seasons of the show will be available to Netflix subscribers right before the start of the next season.

"Additional seasons of The Walking Dead, as well as certain future AMC and Sundance Channel programming, will be streaming instantly to Netflix members just prior to the premiere of subsequent seasons."

The text of the release also talks about a non exclusivity agreement which brings shows from AMC, IFC, Sundance Channel, and WE tv to Netflix.

"Specific series include IFC’s Portlandia and The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret; WE tv’s Braxton Family Values, My Fair Wedding, and Bridezillas; and Sundance Channel’s All On The Line with Joe Zee and Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys."

Netflix has already secured the rights to stream other AMC shows like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" so having exclusive access to "The Walking Dead" really rounds out their portfolio of fantastic AMC shows.

AMC Networks President and CEO Josh Sapan talked about the deal with Netflix in the context of it supporting their "cable ecosystem" because it makes content available but not until about a year after the season starts. That means the deal doesn't eliminate the desire to watch the show as it airs. Having streaming content for the previous season available right before the next starts is a nice way for fans to refresh their memories or for new fans to get up to speed quickly.
