Three strikes rule ‘halves’ piracy in New Zealand!

23 Jul 12 20:41 by in category Piracy

The BBC reports today that the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand (RIANZ) claims that the controversial three strikes anti-piracy legislation in New Zealand is a major success and has halved piracy levels in New Zealand. RIANZ statistics report that incidences of the top 200 movies being illegally viewed dropped abruptly from 110,000 to 50,000 in the month following the introduction of the legislation.

The new legislation provides for fines of up to NZ$15,000 (New Zealand dollars) if pirates are caught for their third infraction however RIANZ admits that four in ten New Zealand Internet users still access pirated content illegally.

The BBC has more on this story here.

And how many have simply switched to VPN's? Or direct download sites instead of bittorrent?

It wouldn't surprise me if half the major pirates have changed to other sources such as file lockers and VPN. HTTP traffic is usually excluded from P2P traffic level reports and most using VPNs will dial a server in another country, in which case this traffic is also hidden from P2P reports, as it's very difficult to tell whether VPN traffic is from a company server or privacy service.

Isn't the "Recording Industry Association of New Zealand" to do with the music industry? So how does the drop in the allegedly illegal viewing of Movies have to do with the Music Industry. And they say nothing about music.
And isn't it great to see that a big company can buy the laws they want and then convict and penalise you with excessive fines while denying people there right to be judged by a Judge or Jury in a court of Law court, and wouldn't they be breaching people's legal rights and privacy.

To date no one down here has received a "3rd strike " letter. The RIANZ and the like want the Gov to drop the ISP charge from $25 to $2 no doubt under the threat of a FTA with the US.. If they do drop it down to $2 just wait for the flood gates to be released and every man and his dog will start getting these letters guilt or not. Just like the RIAA with their shotgun approach hoping that some will stick..

paul, you're from NZ? Did you just say there, what do you mean with the ISP charge? Do ISPs in NZ pay to the music industry?

Apple and Facebook running governments?! (At the moment, the entertainment companies are not the biggest at all, not even the Hollywood ones.)

Yes I live in NZ. The ISP charge of $25 is what the RIANZ, MPAA and the like pay to a NZ IPS if they want to find out who has what IP address and their contact details. The ISPs paying nothing to the music industry..

If your referring to VPNs then yes. But we also use VPNs for watching the like of Hulu, Netflix etc as the content providers are still in last centuries mindset..
