TiVo placing all bets on new Premiere DVR units

TiVo may have been an industry pioneer in the DVR market years ago, but the company has lost much of its public appeal to consumers.

The company's anticipated change to reclaim relevance will begin later this spring, when it will release its Premiere DVR for $299.  Premiere will ship with a 320GB hard drive that provides storage for 45 hours high-definition and 400 hours standard-definition content.  The Premiere is expected to be released sometime in April.

TiVo will also have a Premiere XL available with a 1TB storage capacity that can can store up to 150 hours HD and 1,350 hours of SD content.  The HD Series 4 box is the smallest DVR TiVo has released, and consumers will be able to listen to Live 365 radio stations and Rhapsody streaming music.  Premiere also includes movie and TV content from Netflix, Blockbuster and Amazon, along with YouTube and other sites.

Both models have two USB 2.0 ports, E-SATA support, Ethernet connection, 720p, 1080i and 1080p support, along with HDMI, Component video and Composite video support.

The company's support of Adobe Flash also gives third party developers the chance to develop appealing apps for consumers.

TiVo has very stiff competition these days, with consumers able to stream content through set-top boxes, cable DVR services, and video game consoles.  TiVo Premiere looks like a step in the right direction for the company, but it's going to take more than one product for the company to stay relevant.

Initial TiVo Premiere details were leaked last week by Best Buy.
