Torrentz.eu has shut down

One of the largest and oldest torrent sites has now shut its doors.  Torrentz.eu started as a site that hosted torrents, and was set up even before the Pirate Bay, but they quickly changed their focus and became a meta-search engine instead of hosting the torrents themselves.  With millions of regular visitors coming to the site in recent years, this closing is a major blow to torrent fans, and along with the end of Kickass Torrents earlier this year, marks a significant change to torrenting community.

There was no warning from the administrators of the site.  It simply stopped completing searches and the site now refers to itself in the past tense:  “Torrentz was a free, fast and powerful meta-search engine combining results from dozens of search engines,”

For those with memberships to the site, when they try to log in they will see the following:  “Torrentz will always love you. Farewell.”

In recent years, apparently under pressure from media companies, Torrentz installed a method to report and take down links to material that infringed copyright, but this wasn't enough, and Torrentz was included in the annual review of infringing sites sent by the RIAA and MPAA to the US government.
