Toshiba announces 24nm eMLC enterprise 12 Gbit/s SAS SSDs

Toshiba Europe today announced a new series of SAS 12.0 Gb/s enterprise SSDs using 24nm eMLC NAND. The drives are targeted  for use in business-critical servers and storage platforms and are part of Toshiba's PX02SSX series. This line of SSDs consists of four drives in capacities of 100, 200, 400 and 800 GB.

According to Toshiba the 24 nm eMLC NAND with an undisclosed controller can achieve random writes of 42,000 IPPS and random reads of 130,000 IOPS. Sequential reads are specified at 1153 MB/s and sequential writes at 429 MB/s. When it comes to reliability of the PX02SSX series SSDs, Toshiba specifies that the drives are good for 30 full drive writes per day with a product life of 5 years.

The drives are available in a  2.5"  form factor and  feature a dual-port 12 Gigabit/s Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface. While the controller is undisclosed, Toshiba mentions in its press release that the drives feature their proprietary Quadruple Swing-By Code (QSBC) which the company markets as a strong and highly efficient Error Correction Code (ECC) protecting against any read errors in the device.

Cryptographic erase versions of the eSSDs are also available, with this feature it's possible to make SSDs quickly unreadable to unauthorized users. Instead of wiping the entire drive, it will only overwrite the cryptographic keys used to encrypt the drive. When the keys are overwritten it's almost impossible to access the encrypted data on the SSD, making it possible to render the SSD useless in milliseconds for those who shouldn't have access to the data.
