Ubisoft releasing Rayman Origins on PC DRM free

Ubisoft can't seem to figure how it wants to handle digital rights management (DRM) these days. The company has had an up and down history with DRM, sometimes requiring users to be online, and other times restricting numbers of installs per game. Now the company has announced it will be bringing 2011 game, Rayman Origins to PC this March surprisingly DRM free.

Ubisoft announced it would be bringing Rayman Origins to PC on Thursday. The game will release in both Europe and the US on March 29 and will keep the four player coop functionality that it had on the consoles.

In addition to the release date for the PC version, Ubisoft announced that the game would come to both retail outlets and various e-shops (including Steam). All of downloadable versions of the game "won't include any 'complicated' DRM."Downloadable versions will require a one time activation code.

The most startling news is that retail, boxed versions of the game will require no DRM at all. No activation code, no being online to connect to a authentication server, no restriction on the number hardware changes per activation code.

Considering the promise of no DRM around downloadable game From Dust, I'm not about to trust Ubisoft at their word on the DRM front. If this does end up coming true it's a step in the right direction for the company to get back some of the good will of their PC gamers.

If you haven't played Rayman Origins yet, its going to be bargain priced on PC at $29.99. It's a fantastic game that should be played by anyone who loves platformers and beautiful art design.
