US Government Targets Pirate Website Revenues

Not content with pursuing purely illegal activities the US Government has now started an initiative to target website revenue streams for sites it deems inappropriate.

The initiative brokered by the US Government’s Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator seeks to cut off, at source, advertising revenue streams for sites they associate with 'undesirable' activity.

Giants such as Microsoft, Google, and Yahoo! have already signed up to the initiative however it remains to be seen whether this will have much of an impact on affected sites.

The USC Annenberg Innovation Lab regularly monitors online advertising and produces a series of regular advertising transparency reports relating to the advertising revenue generated by illicit file sharing websites.

It’s clear from their latest analysis (available here) that the top revenue sources are not companies that have signed up to the initiative. Furthermore, in a rather ironic and seemingly uncoordinated move, the MPAA has rather surprisingly chosen to criticise the whole scheme.
