USB Implementers Forum announces 3.5mm audio jack replacement

The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) today announced USB Audio Device Class 3.0 that should reduce power consumption and add support for new features such as hotword detection. The 3.0 version of the audio specification for USB should make USB Type-C the primary interface for accessories like headsets, mobile devices, docking stations and (VR) gaming set-ups.

USB Audio Device Class 3.0 can replace the 3.5mm audio jack with the added benefit that it can also deliver power over the USB Type-C connector.

Some manufacturers already use an older version of the Audio Device Class but the new specification adds additional functionality. It adds improvements in power consumption and adds speech recognition using hotword detection.

USB-IF claims that when the USB-Type C connector replaces the 3.5mm audio jack, manufacturers can easier design waterproof or water-resistant devices. It should also reduce costs and space by using fewer connectors.
