Users around the world lose internet connection after Windows Update (with fix)

Users around the world are reporting that they are no longer able to connect to the internet after applying a Windows Update. They receive the error 'Wi-Fi doesn't have a valid IP configuration'. Several ISPs around the world report about the issue and they report Microsoft is aware of the issue too. Fortunately there is a simple solution available.

The British provider Virgin Media writes on its support page, "Some Windows 10 users are experiencing difficulty connecting to the internet after installing the latest update. In most cases the IP address is now starting 169…"

The provider provides a possible solution which according to user reports appears to fix the issue:

  • Click Start
  • Click Run
  • Type in CMD and press Enter.
  • This should open up a command prompt window.
  • Now type in ipconfig /release and press Enter.
  • Finally, type in ipconfig /renew and press Enter

Also the Dutch provider Ziggo writes (translated), "Due to a Windows 10 update your internet might not work. We are working with Microsoft on a solution". The ISP links to a page describing how to perform a Windows 10 recovery as a solution. Which seems to be a bit overkill, considering that the steps from Virgin Media solve the issue.
