Verizon FiOS now offers OpenFilm independent titles on demand

Verizon complimented its sizable VOD offering with a new addition this week: over 7,000 indie movies for FiOS subscribers. Thanks to a deal struck with OpenFilm, a site "dedicated to developing, marketing and distributing great works," the company is tapping into a market that suddenly seems all the rage.

FiOS TV subscribers should now have access to OpenFilm's impressive catalog of independent content with the touch of a button, reports Home Media Magazine.

In a statement about the deal, OpenFilm's CEO Dmitry Kozko was enthusiastic about the opportunity to offer his site's novel material to a new audience.

Openfilm is excited to reach Verizon's FiOS TV customers and deliver high-quality indie films hand-selected by our content editors from our vast catalog of more than 7,200 films. We strategically chose to work with Verizon FiOS because of its reach and influence as a leading supplier of independent film to its customers, which make this a compelling distribution channel for indie filmmakers. We expect that Verizon's FiOS TV customers will love our unique films, and at the same time, our filmmakers will benefit from showcasing their work to these highly coveted audiences.

Tapping the little guy on the shoulder is not a new move for companies seeking ways to expand their marketshare and wallets in equal measure. And it usually doesn't hurt the little guy, either.

Last month an upstart indie film streaming site called "Fandor" launched, boasting a Facebook sharing feature that leveraged the social networking site's popularity to garner new customers.

It's unclear how OpenFilm's original streaming content will fare against major network TV programming and big budget Hollywood blockbusters -- both of which also call FiOS TV home. However, offering consumers more options is rarely a bad move.
