The software giant has explained on its blog how the upgrade to Windows 10 will be rolled-out. The company will first roll-out the software to Windows Insider subscribers who have been testing the OS for some time already. Once all Insiders, about 5 million, have received Windows 10, the users who also reserved a copy of Windows 10 will be the next group with the possibility  to download Windows 10.

Computers of users who reserved Windows 10 will first be tested to check whether their system is compatible with the OS, according to Microsoft. When the system can't be upgraded to Windows 10 the installation procedure will provide tips to users on how to make their system compatible.

When the first non-Windows-Insider users can start downloading Windows 10 is not announced, but it's possible that this is several days after the initial release. Microsoft will start will slowly rolling-out the upgrade and will gradually scale up. The company hopes to be able to identify possible issues in an early stage this way.

Microsoft hopes to upgrade more than 1 billion devices to Windows 10. Therefore it's likely that the roll-out will take weeks. Enterprise users will have to wait a little longer, Windows 10 will become available for them from the first of August. Microsoft also states that hardware manufacturers will 'soon' get the possibility to install Windows 10 on their devices, but has not disclosed further details.

Last month Windows 7 and Windows 8.x users were prompted with the possibility to reserve a copy of Windows 10. They will be informed as soon as it's their turn to download the software.
