Washington Post website denies access to users that block advertisements

The Washington Post is currently not allowing users with an ad blocker to view their site. Users that visit the website with an adblocker enabled are shown an overlay stating the website serves advertisements that are safe and that the website respects the user's privacy.

By addressing those concerns the Washington Post hopes to convince users to disable their adblocker. If users don't disable their adblocker they have no access to articles of the online newspaper.

Some adblock users that visit the Washington Post website report that they are not asked to disable their adblocker, but are asked to subscribe to a newsletter in order to gain access.

According to the newspaper they are currently testing. "Without income via subscriptions or advertising, we are unable to deliver the journalism that people coming to our site expect from us. We are currently running a test using a few different approaches to see what moves these readers to either enable ads on The Washington Post, or subscribe", according to a spokesman of the website in an interview with Buzzfeed.
