Water damage and operating system are the main causes of data loss on smartphones in 2014, according to analysis of data recovery company Stellar. Together water damage (35%) and the operating system (35%) account for 70% of all data loss on smartphones.
Other causes are shock (20%) and user mistakes (8%). The numbers are valid for both consumer and business users.

For consumers it's becoming cheaper to get their data recovered, users pay between $200 and $1700 to get their data back. The price decrease is likely caused by increasing competition in the data recovery market.
