Western Digital, a leader in the hard drive market has released its new WD RE SAS and WD RE SATA series of hard disks in capacities of 1TB (SAS only), 2TB, 3TB and 4TB, designed for the enterprise market, including high-capacity and 100% duty cycle 24/7 requirements, such as cloud storage/computing. The 4TB capacity models allow up to 240TB of raw capacity in a single dense 60-disk 4U array, giving up to 2.4PB of raw capacity in a single 10 4U enterprise rack.
These SAS and SATA models feature 5 platters (800 GB per platter), 7200RPM spindle, 32MB cache, 6Gbps interface, dual-port full duplex connectivity on SAS models, NoTouch ramp load technology where the heads never touch the platter surface, Dual Stage Actuation (DSA) and Rotary Acceleration Feed Forward (RAFF) to maintain performance when faced with vibrations from multi-drive chassis and MTBF ratings of 1.4M hours for SAS and 1.2M hours for SATA models.
These drives are now available with suggested retail prices of €293 (3TB SATA), €390 (4TB SATA), €327 (3TB SAS) and €400 (4TB SAS). No pricing has been announced for the 1TB or 2TB models. All are backed by a 5-year limited warranty.
