Western Digital releases MyPassport Wireless HD

Western Digital is trying some new tactics in external hard drives these days, and their new MyPassport Wireless edition has a couple of useful additions.  Most external hard drives have USB 3 and 2.5" mechanical drives, but this one adds an SD slot, 802.11n Wi-Fi connectivity., and a small amount of solid state storage, so this model is actually a hybrid drive.

The Wi-Fi is rated for eight users simultaneously accessing the drive or it can process four HD video streams at the same time.  An internal FTP server will allow connections to Wi-Fi equipped cameras, and it can share internet connections with several different devices.  There is a web interface which gives the user control of various functions, and it is compatible with Android and iOS applications.

The internal battery for the drive is good for six hours of video streaming according to Western Digital.

The added features in this drive make it fairly expensive in comparison to most external drives, in fact, those features basically double the price of the drive.  Three different capacities are available.  The 500GB model has a suggested retail price of $129.99, the 1TB model is $179.99 and the 2TB model is $219.99.
