Week old Android 4.4. Kitkat build KOT31B appears – will it be 4.4.1?
An inattentive Google employee has revealed a new build of Android Kitkat. The build named KOT31B appeared in the Chromium issue tracker. The issue was first marked with the Google-Restrict-View label which makes it only readable to Google employees but the label was later removed. The build is only a week old and could be the sign we’ll see a 4.4.1 version.
Starting with Cupcake, individual builds are identified with a short build code like KOT31B . The first letter is the code name of the release family, e.g. K is Kitkat. The second letter is a branch code that allows Google to identify the exact code branch that the build was made from, and R is by convention the primary release branch, what the ‘O’ means is unclear but also Jelly Bean saw several ‘O’ releases.
The next letter and two digits are a date code. The letter counts quarters, with A being Q1 2009. Therefore, T is Q4 2013. The two digits count days within the quarter, so T31 is October 31 2013. Finally, the last letter identifies individual versions related to the same date code, sequentially starting with A. So B is the second version of that day.
Google states on their website that the date code is not guaranteed to be the exact date at which a build was made, and it is common that minor variations added to an existing build re-use the same date code as that existing build.
