WiGig, WirelessHD & WHDI wireless protocols to succeed Wi-Fi

Move over Wi-Fi; there are three new wireless video technologies in town. Wireless home digital interface (WHDI), WirelessHD, and Wireless Gigabit (WiGig) will all vie to move the communication system into the next generation.

According to In-Stat, the trio could soon take over living rooms and coffee shops around the world. One specification, however, could enjoy an early jump.

"While all three technologies will see some type of market adoption over the forecast period, WiGig is likely to be the most popular wireless HD video technology," said Brian O'Rourke, In-Stat research director. "The specification has support from a wide range of technology companies, including silicon vendors, CE device makers, mobile phone vendors, and software companies. In addition, WiGig will be the 60GHz Wi-Fi specification, called 802.11ad."

The firm said Wireless Gigabit Alliance, which counts AMD, Cisco and Microsoft employees as board members, will see greater adoption for mobile and PC docking. WHDI and WirelessHD, meanwhile, should prove popular for various CE devices.

WiGig can transmit up to 7 GB/s over a 60 GHz band connection. The WirelessHD consortium boasts similar statistics. WHDI, backed by Sony, Samsung, LG, and others, aims to corner the market for how CE devices connect to digital TVs.
