Windows 10 growth slower than Microsoft anticipated - 1 billion goal far away

Microsoft expects that it won't be able to achieve its self-imposed goal of 1 billion Windows 10 devices by 2018. The reason this likely won't happen is mainly due disappointing Windows 10 Phone sales.

Microsoft's Terry Myerson predicted in 2015 that Windows 10 would be on 1 billion devices within 2-3 years after the OS was released. The company no longer expects to achieve that milestone within that timeframe, ZDNet reports.

Nevertheless, Windows 10 is still the fastest growing new Windows version ever. At the end of June the number of Windows 10 devices was reported to be 350 million. The company is happy with Windows 10's progress but due to lower number of sold Windows 10 Phones it will take longer than the fiscal year of 2018 to achieve the goal of 1 billion Windows 10 devices, a spokesperson told ZDnet.

The Redmond software giant expected its 1 billion Windows 10 devices goal was feasible due to large number of different devices on which Windows 10 runs. Besides traditional PCs and laptops it also runs on tablets, smartphones, the Xbox One, Hololens and Internet of Things devices.
