Windows 10 .ISO downloads no longer available - Microsoft enforces usage of Media Creation Tool

Microsoft no longer offers the possibility to download Windows 10 as an .ISO file. The company wants users to use the Media Creation Tool which became available with the release of the operating system.

Instead of a page providing the ISO files, users are now redirected to a page with the Media Creation Tool, an application that makes it possible to upgrade existing Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 installations to Windows 10.

Microsoft has been pushing the Media Creation Tool since the release of Windows 10 and promotes it as the best way to upgrade. The tool makes it possible to create an ISO, but only from an existing installation including all programs and settings. A clean install isn't supported.

The company does provide free upgrades to Windows 10, but only to users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Previously it was possibly to a clean install but the option was well hidden by Microsoft.

It's likely Microsoft no longer offers the option to fight piracy.
