Windows 10 Mobile update bricks smartphones

Windows Phone users report bricked devices after updating to the latest technical preview build of Windows 10 Mobile. The bricked devices are all non-Lumia smartphones and Microsoft warns owners of those phones not to install build 10536. This build is distributed to Windows Insiders in the 'Fast Ring' and installing it results in a bricked device.

The update is released to all Windows Phone users subscribed to the Windows Insider program, but shouldn't be install on Windows Phones other than Microsoft's own Lumia devices, according to Windows Insider manager Gabe Aul.

After build 10536 is installed the device becomes unusable and has to be flashed again. According to Abe the incompatible devices are the victim of a 'detectoid' bug, but it's unclear what that exactly means.

It's the second time in a short period that there are issues with the Windows 10 Mobile Technical previews. Several days ago Microsoft distributed build 10536 to users accidently and earlier builds were delayed due to bugs. Windows 10 Mobile should be released by the end of this year.
