Windows 10 security heavily relies on fingerprints and eye scans

Windows 10 will support biometric login methods which allow logging in on the computer or Outlook with a fingerprint or eye scan. Microsoft announced the new feature on the Stanford Cyber Security Forum. Windows 10 will support the open standard FIDO (Fast IDentification Online). This standard promises simple deployment of biometric identification equipment from different vendors.

Microsoft has always stated it wants to get rid of the current username and password method. According to the company the method is obsolete and no longer safe enough. The FIDO standard aims to replace the entire password with biometric data which means that it is no longer just an additional security layer, like on the iPhone and iPad.

However, the biometric identification can also be used alongside traditional authentication. In addition, the default is that no biometric data of the user is stored centrally. All authentication is controlled by the system locally. The first version of the FIDO standard was released in January, Windows 10 will support version 2.0 and higher.

The standard has the support of many large companies in the high-tech sector and the financial world.
