Windows 7 lost 5% market share in second half 2015, XP still on 10% of computers

In December 2015 about 10% of the internet users was still on the unsupported Windows XP, according to market research companies NetApplications and StatCounter. Microsoft stopped releasing security patches for the 14 year old operating system about 1.5 years ago making ten millions of computers very vulnerable to malware.

Net Applications reports a market share of Windows XP of about 11% while StatCounter reports 8.4%. Since the 14th of April 2014 Microsoft no longer releases security patches for Windows XP. Some experts already warned for 'XPocalypse'. This would be a moment where XP computers would massively become a victim to cyber attacks.

Such an event did not occur which is likely also a reason why a large group still hasn't updated to the new OS.

The most used Windows operating system remains Windows 7, although it has lost about 5% in the last half year of 2015. The reason is likely the release of Windows 10 in July, which is a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users.

According to Net Applications the number of Windows XP users is with 11% still higher than the 10% market share of Windows 10. The numbers StatCounter report don't agree, they report that Windows 10 has a market share of 11.8%, while XP is on 8.4% of the measured systems.
