Windows 7 update prevents PCs with Asus mainboards to boot

A Windows 7 update causes issues with Asus motherboards on some computer. After installing KB3133977 the operating system will no longer start and the UEFI BIOS reports a 'Secure Boot Violation'. The Secure Boot feature is however not included in Windows 7 but only in Windows 8 and upwards.

The problem is obviously that the UEFI BIOS erroneously checks whether Secure Boot is enabled. Normally the KB3133977 would have only fixed an issue with Bitlocker, but now Microsoft reports about the side effect with Asus motherboards, "This problem occurs because ASUS allowed the main board to enable the Secure Boot process even though Windows 7 does not support this feature."

The first reports about the issue appeared in mid-March, shortly after the patch was released. Asus has now published a step-by-step guide on how to solve the issue.
