Windows 8.1 Preview often fails to install, users report many issues

Users around the web report that they can't install the Windows 8.1 Preview and those who are able to install it report lots of issues. Microsoft is releasing preview versions of their software to smash the last bugs. But since yesterday 50 pages of forum threads on the Microsoft Answers website emerged. Many users report that they are unable to install the Preview.

This inability comes because Microsoft has restricted the Windows 8 Preview to only 13 languages,  Arabic, English (US), Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Swedish, and Turkish.

If your language is not in this list, you won't be able to install without an unofficial workaround. Note that this also means that users  from the United Kingom (English - UK )and Portugal (Portuguese - Portugal) are not included.

Users of Windows 8 Enterprise or Windows 8 Pro, activated with a Volume License, also won't find the update in the Windows Store. They need to update by downloading an ISO. Another showstopper is the lack of CPU features e.g  devices containing Intel’s 32-bit Atom SoC's won't be able to install.  If you have a 64 bit CPU then it must  support CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW  and LAHF/SAHF instructions. This can be an issue if you run old AMD or Intel 64 bit CPU's.

An issue that doesn't stop you from installing, but might be good to know.  If you're running Windows 8 and have installed a language pack or a language interface pack (LIP), they'll be removed when you install Windows 8.1 Preview.

If you meet the system requirements and are in for a test, download the Windows 8.1 Preview here.
