Windows 8 market share at 4 percent

Six months after it's introduction Windows 8 has a market share of nearly 4 percent. According to statistics released by Statcounter the operating system has reached a market share of 4.74% in April 2013.  Numbers released by competitor Net Applications tell nearly the same story, they report a market share of 3.82%. Statcounter measures all internet traffic while Net Applications only measures operating systems of desktop computers.

Windows 8 became commercially available in October lat years. The operating system was a radical change from Windows 7 and Windows XP. It was the first version of Windows without a start menu and start button.Microsoft introduced a new GUI, called Metro, in an effort to optimize the operating system for touchscreens.

How many licenses of Windows 8 have been sold remains unknown. In January Microsoft claimed that it had sold 60 million but since then no new numbers have been released.
