Windows 8 now on more than 10% of PCs, XP usage drops

The combined amount of internet users using Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 passed the 10 percent mark in December last year. The outdated operating system Windows XP saw a severe drop in users. The numbers are compiled by Net Applications. All Windows versions combined are good for 90.8% of the PC operating systems market.

Almost 29% of all internet users still uses Windows XP.  This operating system will no longer receive updates by April this year. This also means no more security patches will be made available for the OS. In November, XP had a market share of more than 31% and it appears users of this OS are now finally switching to Windows 7 and Windows 8.

The percentage of internet users with Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 is now 10.5%, the amount of Windows 7 users increased from 46.6% to 47.5%. Last month we reported that Microsoft has decided to continue to sell Windows 7 longer than expected. Traditionally the company stops sales of an OS when a new OS is released.

Microsoft is warning XP users for months already for the end of the support for the OS. It hopes to have brought down the market share of XP to 10% by April this year.
