Windows 8 to boost HDD sales - market recovers after floods

Research firm iSuppli has released a report on hard disk drive (HDD) shipments in 2012. The HDD market was hit due to a flood in Thailand which destroyed a factory from Western Digital, responsible for a huge volume of parts used in HDDs globally. This created a shortage, resulting in a global price increase. Fortunately, the market is recovering and for the entire year iSuppli estimates that 524 million units will be shipped. This is an increase of 4.3% over 2011 and it is expected that HDD shipments will continue to increase to 575 million units per year by 2016.

The report does not include all shipments of HDDs,  only shipments of disks in PCs (desktops, laptops) and servers are counted, external HDDs, DVR disk and HDDs used in cars are excluded from the report.

According to iSupply the demand of HDDs in PCs and servers grows due to the fact that people store more videos and music. But the biggest driver of the shipments of  HDDs  the coming time is expected to be Windows 8. Researchers expect that with the release of Microsoft's latest operating system a lot of consumers will purchase new computers which also benefit the suppliers of computer parts, such as hard-disks.
