Windows Azure Cloud storage service down temporarily

The cloud is a promised land of huge offsite storage and wonderful new applications according to the giants of the software industry.  Unfortunately, it isn't always accessible.  Today, just before 2 pm Pacific time in the US, Microsoft's Azure cloud service went down due to an SSL certificate that expired.

This oversight on Microsoft's part meant that the Azure storage service was closed around the world, and continues to be a problem many hours later.  Microsoft has issued this statement:

Storage is currently experiencing a worldwide outage impacting HTTPS operations (SSL traffic) due to an expired certificate. HTTP traffic is not impacted. We are validating the recovery options before implementing them. Further updates will be published to keep you apprised of the situation. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes our customers.

More can be seen at the Microsoft Azure site.
