Windows Blue now officially designated Windows 8.1

Microsoft has been working on an update to their newest operating system for months now, with the working title of Windows Blue.  This has been widely reported around the net, and is a very poorly held secret, if ever it was meant to be secret.  Microsoft is now renaming this project, calling it Windows 8.1, as revealed by Tami Reller, the CMO and CFO of Microsoft's Windows Division.

The update will be free to download from the Windows Store, once it becomes available to the general public, and Microsoft intends to release a "preview" of Windows 8.1 on June 26th.

Windows 8.1 will apply to both Windows 8 and Windows RT.  There has been some speculation that Windows 8.1 will enable manufacturers to produce smaller tablets, in the 7 or 8 inch range, and Ms. Reller's comments at the JP Morgan Technology, Media & Telecom Conference seem to support this, as she says the operating system will be great for even the smallest tablets.
