Windows Store app reveals Microsoft will offer prepaid mobile data plans

An app in the Windows Store reveals that Microsoft is going to offer prepaid mobile data plans. The company will likely become a virtual provider, where it sells its service while using the infrastructure of another provider.

The company is currently testing an app which allows Windows 10 devices to connect to mobile networks without a subscription. Although the app is available in the Windows App store, it hasn't been publically announced yet.

"The Cellular data app allows you to connect to a trusted nationwide mobile data network using only your Microsoft account", according to the description of the app.

To use the app a special Microsoft sim card is required and it will only work with Windows devices, according to the description of the app. The app is free but also offers in-app purchases, new data can be bought through the Windows Store and likely also in the app.

It's unclear when and where Microsoft will launch the service and with which mobile provider(s) it will cooperate. It's likely it will be available in several countries, as the description states, "service is available in some markets and offers are for domestic plans only – international roaming offers will be available soon."
