Windows Vista & Windows 7 PCs more often infected with malware than Windows 8.1

Computers running Windows Vista are more often infected with malware than computers with Windows 8.1 installed, according to Microsoft based on own research. In the third and fourth quarter of 2014 about 7.8 out of 1000 PCs running Vista were infected with malware.

In case of computers running Windows 8.1 this was 1.6 PCs out of 1000 where malware was found.

"The latest data on how different versions of the Windows operating system are mitigating modern malware attacks suggests that newer versions are performing better than older versions", according to Microsoft's Tim Rains.

That doesn't seem to be entirely right, when looking at the fourth quarter of 2014 in the graph, it appears that Windows 7 computers are more often infected with malware than Windows Vista PCs.  Also because the data is normalized, meaning the infection rate for each version of Windows is calculated by comparing an equal number of computers per version.
