Windows XP registry hack to receive security updates still works

The Windows XP registry hack which allows users of the outdated operating system to continue to receive security updates still works. By changing a value in the Windows XP registry the unsupported OS receives updates for Windows POSReady 2009 which is based on Windows XP and still supported by Microsoft.

Microsoft supports Windows POSReady 2009 with updates till the 9th of April 2019 in contrary to Windows XP that's unsupported since the 8th of April this year. Although the hack works and still seems to work, Microsoft warns that the update have not been made and tested for Windows XP.

Previously IT Journalist Larry Seltzer discovered that based on the descriptions of the POSReady 2009 updates, the updates might also be suitable for Windows XP. The journalist also expected that Microsoft would try to stop the hack from working.

For now the software giant for Redmond still hasn't pulled the plug on the hack and systems making use of the registry hack still received security patches. Microsoft released 4 updates for POSReady 2009 which installed fine on XP systems. Also the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool received an update on systems using the hack, according to an user on Wilders Security.
