The numbers reported by Net Applications show that 61% of the internet users used Windows 7 in June, a growth of 3.2% compared to May. Windows XP lost 2.6% of its users resulting in a 12% overall market share.

Competing research company StatCounter reports similar changes but reports less extreme alterations. In June, Windows 7 gained 0.7% and now holds an overall market share of 53.7% according to StatCounter's numbers. The company reports the number of Windows XP users has dropped with 0.5% to a market share of 10%.

The move to Windows 7 is surprising, the operating system has already been superseded by Windows 8.1.
