Xbox 360 USB storage support coming soon

According to leaked documents, Microsoft is working on a new USB mass storage feature that will give Xbox 360 owners up to 16GB of additional storage space per compatible USB device.

Content can range from downloaded games to saved game data, as well as other material that is immediately accessed and stored directly on the USB storage device.  The drive must have at least 1 GB of storage space -- and no more than 16GB -- and will have to be formatted specifically for the Xbox 360 only.

Users will be able to connect a maximum of two USB storage drives to one Xbox 360, allowing up to 32GB max storage capacity.  Specifically, content from Xbox Live Arcade, Games on Demand, Xbox Live Indie games and Title Updates can be downloaded and stored directly on the external storage.

With the revelation of this news, it seems like only a matter of time before those pesky proprietary Microsoft Xbox 360 512MB memory cards will disappear forever.

"USB storage devices may, however, have far greater memory capacity than [memory units] (at the date of writing, the largest MU is 512 MB), and may therefore support previously infeasible operations -- such as installation of a full disc-based title," according to the Joystiq report.

An exact release date hasn't been announced, but it is expected sometime this spring.

Microsoft has not been keen on third-parties offering console peripherals and has even gone so far as updating the system software to render 3rd party memory cards useless on the Xbox 360.
