Yahoo! accounts hacked!

13 Jul 12 21:41 by in category Uncategorized

Yahoo! yesterday announced that they’d been hacked leaving a sizeable number of their users with potentially compromised accounts. Hacking group D33DS has claimed responsibility with Yahoo! confirming that one of its older files from the Yahoo! Contributor Network that contains around 450,000 Yahoo! and other company’s user names and passwords, was compromised.

Yahoo! insists that only five percent of the passwords included in this file were still valid however they have responded by resetting passwords and notifying affected users which include those with yahoo.com, gmail.com and aol.com email addresses.

BBC News discusses this in further detail here.

Changed my password right away just in case. I understand that no site is 100% secure, but these companies don't seem to be trying at all to protect personal information....

It never does any harm to be prepared for these sorts of things. Sometimes the hassle though can be annoying.

Unfortunately incidents like this seem to be happening more and more frequently these days but in this particular case the thing that I thought was inexcusable was that the stolen data files weren't even encrypted.
